Police arrested 21 drivers for suspected drunken driving between May 20 and Monday; eight were involved in traffic accidents; four were younger than 21.

Police arrested 21 drivers for suspected drunken driving between May 20 and Monday; eight were involved in traffic accidents; four were younger than 21.

Police have made 555 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 610 during the same period in 2012, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 11 motorists, South Hilo officers arrested seven and Puna officers two, according to police. South Kohala officers arrested one motorist.

There have been 584 major accidents this year compared with 635 during the same period in 2012. To date, there have been 16 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 14 at this time in 2012. To date, one fatality was related to drugs; one to alcohol and two to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
